Shanghai: Plaisirs interdits au Peace Hotel/Forbidden pleasures of the Peace Hotel

If you have a chance like me to visit at night the wonderful and mythic Peace Hotel on the Shanghai Bund, you will instantaneously be carried into the somewhat old-fashioned but fascinating atmosphere of the Shanghai 30's. Built by the jewish sephardim tycoon Victor Sassoon in 1929, the Peace Hotel, was initially called Sassoon House then Cathay Hotel before it's current designation. The building is considered one of the Shanghai art-deco gems. It is said that the famous master of the place had its appartments right under the roof of the building in order to enjoy of the best views of the time on both Bund and Huangpu river. Inside the hotel lobby and further down the corridor connecting it to the Bund, you will undoubtedly be charmed by the magnificent geometrical design along ceilings and door frames imagined by architects Palmer and Turner.

But most of all indulge yourself to the loundge café where cakes and drinks are served at the sound of the piano, like in most luxury hotels of this time. There, trapeze-shaped lamps along the ceiling and the walls, elegant marble on the ground will achieve to take you back in the memorable times of both rich and optimistic Shanghai 30's. Finally, you will make the illusion even more perfect if you visit the tea-salon on the Nanjing Road side: some colorful French macarons, hand-made chocolates and rather creative chocolate desserts in the shape of the famous Sir Victor's cigars can be appreciated in the middle of old photographs and with light and joyful jazz music. You can even join the priviledged customers of the salon for a nice glass of French white wine at the light of the table-canddles :-) To get to know more about the hidden art-deco treasures of the forner British Concession, visit us on www.chinaworldexplorers.com
