Shanghai homo delphinus

Version Française As the biopic on oceanographer Jacques Cousteau featuring Lambert Wilson in the main role, "L'Odyssée" is about to come out in France, I cannot help myself from thinking of another deep ocean lover who was born in Shanghai: Jacques Mayol. Jacques Mayol is known all over the world from Luc Besson movie "The Big Blue" (last photo) which was inspired by his life. Heritage swimming pools in Shanghai

Looking for a place to swim last summer, I got into the idea of looking for old swimming pools in Shanghai as a habit from my time back in Paris. Actually there were a few swimming pools in Shanghai during the 30’s, most of them related to foreign clubs.    The longest in town The longest swimming pool could be found inside the Cercle Sportif Français on Rue du Cardinal Mercier (today Maoming Road). Shanghai homo delphinus

English version Au moment où sort en France un biopic sur le Commandant Cousteau, "L'Odysée", avec Lambert Wilson dans le rôle principal, j'ai envie d'évoquer un autre amoureux de la mer, né à Shanghai: Jacques Mayol! Jacques Mayol a été rendu célèbre par le film de Luc Besson "Le Grand Bleu" (dernière photo) inspiré par sa vie. Il est le fils de Laurent Mayol, architecte Français travaillant dans la Concession Française de Shanghai des années 1920 et 1930.
